The Town of Shelby (pop. 4600), La Crosse County is accepting applications from qualified candidates to fill the position of Director of Public Work. A strong candidate will have an understanding of 21st century skills with ability to triage problems; excellent communication skills; the ability to remain positive and flexible; and a demonstrated ability to lead and develop people.
The Director plans, manages and directs Shelby’s Public Works and Utility Operations including the areas of engineering, capital projects design and construction, water supply, operation and maintenance, sanitary sewer collection system, storm water collection and control, parks and open spaces. The Shelby Department of Public Works consists of 6 full time employees with 2-4 seasonal and part time staff hired during the summer and for other purposes. Facilities include about 45 miles of roadway, 5 miles of storm sewer, 38 miles of sanitary sewer, 6 miles of water main with two below ground water storage facilities, 58 acres of park land, over 4 miles of trails, three Village-owned/operated. Shelby is an attractive family-oriented suburban town located adjacent to the City of La Crosse, in La Crosse, County.
Qualifications: This position requires graduation from a four-year college and 5 years of public works experience or at least 10 years of public works experience with a major thrust in administration in lieu of a degree. Certification as a Wisconsin Professional Engineer is desirable or 10 years of experience as a major thrust in Public Works. Possession of Wisconsin Grade I Water Operator Certification and/or Wisconsin Basic Wastewater Operator Certification with collection system subclass is also desirable.
