Single Stream Recycling:
The Town Board recently approved single steam recycling. The new system will use the "wheeled cart" just like your garbage/refuse cart. Collection will be with the automatic arm.
Single Stream Recycling allows a wider range of materials to be collected, and ALL the recyclables (paper, plastic, aluminum) may be placed in one container. The cost of the new service will be aprox. $11 per residence per year. This will be added to the cost of refuse and recycling already being placed on the tax bill as a special charge. The 2014 tax bill showed a $112.00 fee. The 2015 tax bill showed a $113.00 fee. The 2016 tax bill showed a $123.00 fee. The new rate takes into account the anticipated savings in refuse tonnage fees, estimated to be 10% or more. (posted 10/14/15)
Curbside Residential Refuse and Recycling Collection
The Town of Shelby provides refuse collection weekly. On Monday, refuse is collected from mobile home parks. On Tuesday, refuse is collected from homes north of the Hwy 14/61 overpass. South of the overpass, collection is on Wednesday. Recyclables are collected on the same day as refuse, but every other week. Recyclables include: newspapers and magazines, cardboard, tin cans, clear and colored glass, plastic (No.'s 1 & 2 only) and aluminum cans. Newspapers, magazines and cardboard should be bundled separately and placed next to or on top of the recycling bin to avoid contamination. Guidelines for refuse and recycling, including a collection calendar are available at the town hall. Replacement recycling bins are also available for $11.
