Dog Licenses

*A puppy/new dog can be licensed at Town Hall. Current rabies vaccination certificate is required in order to obtain a license.

2024 Puppy/New Dog Application

Not Spayed or Neutered:$24.00
Spayed or Neutered: $13.00
(Proof of spaying or neutering is required the first time registering as such)
Puppies: If your puppy was born after February 1st (of the licensing year), the fee is $12.00. If the puppy has been spayed or neutered the fee is $6.50.

Annually, dog license renewals are due January 1st, and are available for purchase in December. After April 1st, a fine is assessed and licenses must be renewed at the La Crosse County Clerk's office (608-785-9581).  If you fail to license your dog by March 31st, you will be assessed a late fee of $25 plus the cost of the dog tag.  This also applies if you get a new dog and fail to license it within 30 days, your puppy turns 5 months old and you fail to license it, or if you move into the County with a dog and fail to license it within 30 days. 

There is town limit of 2 dogs per household, however a special exception permit to have up to 4 dogs can be approved by the Town Board.
To exceed 2 dogs per household, you must apply
Application to Exceed 2 Dog Limit and pay a $10.00 application fee (in addition to the license fee). The application must be approved at a Town Board meeting. The Town Board may approve or deny your application at their discretion per Town of Shelby Ordinance 2.09.

Cat Licenses

Cat licenses are not a La Crosse County license and are issued by Town of Shelby.  The license fee is $5.00 fee per cat. 
A current rabies vaccination certificate is required each year.

ONLINE CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS FOR 2024 DOG LICENSE RENEWALS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 4 PM 3/29/2024.

*Credit cards are processed through a 3rd party, AllPaid.  The Town is not charging or collecting the processing fee.  The fees are charged by AllPaid and will vary based on the amount processed.   

*To avoid extra fees you are welcome to send a payment, pay in person or use the drop box at the Town Hall.

*If you are paying online, please either drop off your pet's rabies certificate or email it to info@townofshelby.com.

Reminder, if your dog is not licensed by March 31st, 2024 - you must obtain a license through the La Crosse County Clerk's Office, 608-785-9581. 

Concerns/Complaints

For Concerns and Complaints about animals in your area, please call Animal Control at 608-781-4014.  Violations of a specific town ordinance should be reported to Town Hall at 608-788-1032.
